On an island off the Italian coast, Amedeo Esposito has found a place where, finally, he can belong. He restores a crumbling building rumoured to be cursed and opens a bar named the "House at the Edge of Night". Soon after he marries the beautiful Pina and starts a family. The island is transformed by war, tourism and recession - but through it all the bar remains: the stage for great love affairs.
